This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Isn't it so much fun to retell a story with props? My students need puppets to help their comprehension skills, ELD skills and acting skills. Also we would like Weekly Readers to help continue the love for reading. We are going to turn weekly readers into a news reporting center for role play.

Kindergrtners are so full of energy and they are like a lot of little sponges.

They want to soak in the information and share it with anyone who will listen. I want to help give them an outlet to share, through the use of Puppets and story telling. My students are from a school where all students are on free lunches. The children are challenged in both economic struggles and language challenges(as English for some is their second language). The parents want the best for the children and will do anything they can to help. My students are given the basic materials to help prepare them for district tests and future state tests. However, the children are not being exposed to the ARTS as much as it is not tested. The children need a chance to be 5 and 6 year olds, be fun and creative, and learn while having fun.

My Project

As my students are learning to read, I want them to really learn how to express themselves while they read. Read with feeling, emotions, volume can tell a story. Right now my students read at a monotone pitch and retell stories the same way. I want to help them bring their stories to life. Each week we focus on a favorite story to work on for ELD. We read the story, do Thinking Maps with the story, sequence the story, act it out and draw and write about it. Now I want to make the puppets available for the children to use to tell the stories on their own, to use in a role play center ( 1 story a week) so I can hear them tell what happened. This is great for comprehension, incorporating the arts and to be used with their Big 4th Grade Buddies. I also want to get Weekly Readers for my students. They are great for my students to read and focus on different topics and subject areas.

The ARTS are still so important and necessary for the children.

With each budget cut the ARTS go away. We went from having an ART, DRAMA, DANCE and MUSIC teacher weekly, to one teacher for 6 times. The puppets will allow the children to continue with the ARTS, while working on crucial reading skills of retelling. The Magazines will be used to a News Reporting Center too. I want to help the children be more comfortable speaking and puppets are a great way to help the shyer children blossom.
