My Students

My middle school scholars are so special because they all have unique goals academically, socially and behaviorally.

Across the grade levels they are learning how to analyze and synthesize different novels and informational texts.

What each child gets out of a text is so interesting to see and hear about.

Everyday is exciting in middle school because of the social aspect that is very present. Helping scholars to work through their social lives and figure out who they are/want to be is one of the best parts of being a middle school teacher.

Their impulsive adolscent behaviors also make every day interesting. Most days I spend a good chunk of working through their actions with them by explaining the good vs. bad choices. Allowing them to reflect on their actions and understand better options for the next time can help them to grow as human beings, not just scholars in the classroom.

Our middle school is unique because their is only one class for each grade level and teachers are responsible for all four grades in their content area. Making our classroom as welcoming and loving as possible plays a huge role in our success as a teacher.

My Project

Students right now are tired of sitting in a desk all day. Many would benefit from the incentive of another seating option.

They would have the ability to begin working in a setting that is more similar to college.

When doing most work in college, after your two hour lecture you are able to go home and do homework on a couch. If our goal is to prepare students for college, I believe introducing these settings in a more stuructured way is essential.

I also look at this couch as an opportunity to make advisory more inviting. During advisory, I have a small group of students that I have built a relationship with. I believe that relationships could be improved if this seating option was available. It could seem as though you were sitting on the couch at home talking to your family.

I truly feel this could alter my classroom environment and provide an incentive for many students.
