Fused and Slumped Glass

My students need a glass slumping kit, five colors of glass squares, 3 bottles of glass noodles, six bottles of different colored frit, 10 glass tool breakers, 10 glass cutters, 4 rolls of high temperature wire, 2 bottles of glass stringers, and 3 glass slump molds.

This project is fully funded

I teach art to grades 9-12 in a high poverty, high unemployment area(currently unemployment is 12.9%), our largest department in the school is our special needs program. The community has recently lost several large employers which has effected all our students in one way or another.

My students have been studying the use of patterns in various cultures. They have been studying patterns, tessellations, Turkish tiles, tesserae, and Islamic tiles. I would like to give the students the opportunity to create his/her own glass tile reflective of one of the cultures we have studied. I have a local glass company that is donating and cutting some clear glass for the students to use. We just need the colored glass and the other materials listed in my supply list. This would be a great opportunity for my students to have the opportunity to work in a medium that they normally would not have the opportunity to work in due to lack of funds.

My students have shown an interest in learning about glass fusing and tile work and by funding this project they would be able to accomplish that goal. This project helps prepare my students for college by exposing them to the art and culture of other countries. Learning first hand how to create tessellations and tile patterns gives the students a greater appreciation of the artists that created the tiles in the Alhambra in Spain, Turkish tile artists, and artists such as M.C. Escher.

By funding this grant you will give my students the opportunity to create beautiful glass projects using tile designs similar to Turkish, Islamic, Spanish artists and compare them to the tile work of artists of today. There is no way that we could ever do a project like this without the help of generous donors such as yourself.
