My students need a long table and chairs to be used mainly for small group instruction but can also be used as a computer work station and area to do art projects.
Every student needs individualized attention because not all students learn in the same way, at the same time, or at the same pace. Having a special table area where a group of students with similar learning needs can receive instruction at their level and collaborate is critical.
My class consists of 24 eager, bright, and hard working second graders.
They come from different backgrounds and have a range of abilities. Half of the students at my school have parents in the military, which makes it challenging for some of them to transition from one school to another as well as from one state/country to another. As their teacher, it is so important for me to create a safe, trusting, and caring classroom environment to help make the transition easier for students.
In addition, my school is also a Title I school, which means that many students come from low-income families. In order to help close the achievement gap, I try to provide integrated instruction to make learning fun. This means incorporating technology and art activities into other subjects like social studies, math, and science.
My Project
My current classroom furniture consists of just enough desks and chairs for each student to use. We do not have any tables to use for small group instruction or even have a table to put computers on. The only place we are able to meet for small group instruction is at the carpet, which has been a challenge because students are not as focused. I know that if we had a table, students would be more focused because they would have to sit up and would also have an easier time writing on a flat surface.
Since computers are very expensive and fragile, I have not been able to set them up yet because there is no stable place for it to go. Therefore, the classroom furniture I am requesting will have multiple purposes ranging from a place for reading/writing/math small group instruction to take place to a computer workstation. In addition, my hope is for the table to be used for art projects/activities so my students' desks and supplies won't get dirty or ruined.
Donations given to support my project will improve student learning because it will become a place more conducive to learning.
I know that when my students use the table and chairs they will be so thankful because they will feel more comfortable when they write, read, and learn. Rather than sitting at the carpet hunching over to write, they can sit on a chair and learn comfortably at a table. I truly see this as an area of need in my classroom and would really appreciate your support.
