As a middle school teacher of Multilingual Learners and students needing reading intervention, I must adapt the curriculum to target student needs. Research has shown that an explicit, structured approach to teaching the workings of English is most efficient and effective for literacy instruction. Small group work allows me to give students more individualized instruction and interact with and coach students who might otherwise be lost in a large class.
Please help me get the best furniture for my room to make small-group work more comfortable and successful.
Currently, my students crowd around a small rectangular table or a cluster of desks for small group work, and I do not have carts conducive for organizing small groups or station work. As I switch between classes and student groups frequently, more efficient furniture will allow me to prepare to maximize class time to offer systematic and structured teacher-led small group work and organize for independent station practice. A kidney table will allow me to be physically closer to students to see their work and give them crucial feedback.
The time I spend working with students in small groups facilitates confidence for middle school learners as they grow toward success in reading and writing. These small group interactions make a difference that can impact lives.
