This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My classroom is a dynamic space where students share ideas and engage in rigorous academic discourse.

My 5th graders are eager learners, enthusiastic, and inquisitive about the world around them.

They absolutely deserve the best, but limited resources both at the school and in the community make it challenging to provide them with everything they need to be successful scholars. Approximately 80% of the students at my school are English learners, 20% newcomers to the country, and over 95% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

My Project

Have you ever had to sit through a long meeting or workshop? I have, and even when the material is highly engaging, it is extremely difficult to sit in a chair at one desk for a couple hours straight, let alone a whole work day. This is what it’s like for many students in school.

My students often work in small groups, and they need flexible seating options.

Most of the chairs we have now are hard, plastic ones that are too low for the table. Frankly, they are uncomfortable.

Our class currently has some exercise ball chairs that they share, as well as a couple standing desks. The students love this alternative furniture, and I have seen how they help students focus as they move around in them. Students can use the requested reading pillows to sit at the rug to do their work, and the flower table will help promote collaboration since students will all be facing one another.

Providing flexible seating options, such as the reading pillows and flower table, will help my students determine how they like to learn best, whether it be in a traditional chair, standing, being on the rug, or using an exercise ball. Consequently, students will able to better focus on their work.
