Furnishing Focus and Success With Floor Cushions and Pillows!

My Project

The floor cushions and floor pillows will furnish success in the classroom by providing flexible seating when meeting at the rug. Students are more focused on the lessons and learning when they are comfortable. Additionally, students thrive when they are given a choice. Having different options for seating in the classroom, is an easy way to provide autonomy and choice.

I have two goals for this project.

The first goal is that students will be more amenable to sitting on the rug. I teach the majority of our mini lessons throughout the day from the rug, where we are gathered together as a whole class near the front of the room. By fifth grade students are less comfortable sitting on the ground and prefer sitting in chairs. By having floor seating available, I hope they will be able to be more comfortable, so that they can tune in to the lessons with less distraction and greater ease. The second goal is to be able to meet the needs of students with accomodations on their IEPS or 504s. There are only so many seats that are “at the front of the classroom.” By having floor options for independent work time, I will be able to provide more front row seating in the class.

The incoming students are special because in that they are the last 5th grade class to have experienced the lockdown during covid. They were kindergarten students in March of 2020. This particular class is challenging in many ways. Missing out on the foundational years of school impacted their social and academic growth. There are many students still catching up to be at grade level. I know that having students buy in to their environment will be critical in laying the foundation for a successful year ahead.
