This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come into my classroom full of life and energy! I refer to us as a "squad" rather than a class because I want them to have a sense of community when they are with me and feel like they belong somewhere. Our school has a very diverse population and I want to bring all of my students together through reading and writing. It is my hope to inspire a spark in them so they develop a love for lifelong learning!
The students are 5th graders from an urban school in Connecticut.
Many of them don't have someone to read with them at night partly because many of the students come from households where English isn't the primary language. They are excited to explore the possibilities reading and writing can bring to them and I am excited to hopefully provide all the supplies they will need!

My Project
It is my true belief that students cannot be successful if they are uncomfortable at a desk all day long. It is this belief that encouraged me to do away with the desks in my classroom in order to introduce flexible seating. With flexible seating my students have the ability to choose a seat that will help them be the most successful. This may be a traditional desk, a bean bag chair, a stool, or even a couch.
I have seen a drastic improvement in my students since I first introduced this practice in our room and I am now hoping to take our flexible seating to the next level with your help!
Flexible seating has also helped my students with special needs work more efficiently since they have the ability to move about and move while working!
