Our school is a Title I, partial Arts Magnet school in urban Charlotte, NC. We currently serve about 560 K-5th students. Our mission statement is to "Create student leaders to be globally competitive through 21st-century learning and by integrating arts across the core curriculum." As a community, we believe all children can learn and experience daily academic success. For that reason, we have implemented PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Systems) as our school-wide behavior program. We focus on providing a positive and supportive environment where behavior is taught and students are given opportunities to be successful and take pride in their achievements.
Our school demographic is very diverse!
In the 2021-2022 school year our demographic divided in the following way: African Americans - 73.2%, Hispanic - 16.3%, White - 4.9%, and other - 5.6%. 100% of our students are eligible to receive free or reduced lunch and about 80% of our students live below the poverty line.
After the uncertainty of last year, we are so excited for the opportunity to have our students back in the building! It is such a joy to see how happy kids are to be back in the classroom learning and growing!
Based on school-wide positive behavior students are able to come in and shop at the store. All the items at the store are free and all students can shop. The amount of "firebird bucks" they have to shop is based on positive ClassDojo points they earn daily. The points are based on our School-Wide Rules - The 3 Be's (Be respectful, Be responsible, Be safe!)
The school doesn't have funding to provide students with positive incentives, therefore, the Student Services team has provided prizes for students through out-of-pocket purchases.
The amount of money we spend monthly adds up and we are not reimbursed by the school or district. Therefore, please consider helping us continue to provide this amazing opportunity for our students by donating to this project!
