I am a fifth grade teacher in District 5 in Harlem where more than 90% of the children at my school receive free/reduced. Although I still love my chalkboard, I am in dire need of an overhead for my classroom in order to display and write notes in a more organized and timely fashion for my students. I thought that overheads were a staple supply in every classroom, but unfortunately they are not. An overhead relieves some of the chalk dust issues that seem to inhabit classrooms like mine that have permanent dust, despite how many times you sweep, spray and Swiffer it all away. In addition, an overhead also allows me to view the class while explaining a lesson, instead of having to keep turning around to face the black board in order to write down notes or other important information. I have also found that several students in the fifth grade have trouble seeing my writing (no matter how big or neat,) because it is blurry on the chalkboard. Most importantly, an overhead is the most time efficient way to convey information to my students. I can put transparencies of maps, graphs, notes, pictures, etc. directly on it, aiding visual learners much more appropriately. I also enable myself to be more mobile so that I can check to make sure the children understand the information in which I am engaging them. Thus, an overhead for my classroom would be an extremely valuable device.
