I am the Physical Education teacher at Public School 42, also known as the Benjamin Altman school. I am new to this particular school, but I have been teaching physical education and health for the past 10 years in a public school in Brooklyn, New York. During the first few days of school I had the opportunity to take an inventory of the physical education equipment. We don't have much -- some basketballs, playground balls, a parachute and some hockey sticks. Definitely not enough equipment to have a outstanding physical education program. P.S. 42 is a wonderful school with a caring administration and staff. There are approximately 700 students in the school from grades PreK-5th. The class sizes range from 18 - 33 students per class. Approximately 25% of the student population are recent immigrants from China. Many of them are in Bilingual and English as a Second Language classes, and many come from families with very low-to-low income levels. The Parent Association in the school has limited funds. Parents find it difficult to contribute additional financial support for the school, as they are living from paycheck to paycheck. I would like to propose a program that will develop a multiplicity of essential physical skills, including tossing, throwing, striking, catching and kicking a variety of objects. Throughout the school year students will be exposed to the whole range of equipment to help them learn. I have found it to be most effective when students can practice the basic skills in a number of different ways. It is extremely important for students, especially at elementary school age, to experience a variety of activities which involve movement and physical skills. Such activities establish a foundation that will help them to remain vigorous and healthy throughout their lives. With the equipment mentioned above, you and I will give these students an opportunity to experience a new and wonderful world of physical fitness through FUN. The equipment needed includes super safe bases, hang a hoop, nerf soccer balls, air shot targets, foam frisbees, spot markers, hoop 'n' target, hook 'n' loop balls, fluff balls, foxtails, beach balls, bowling pins, batting tees, ultra foam bats, volleyballs, bean bags, and fitness dice.
