Help me give my students a leveled library in order to meet their needs as readers and provide different types of books for the variety of interests that my first graders have!
I work at an elementary school in Berwick, ME. I currently have 17 students; 15 general education students and 2 special needs students. While we are currently learning remotely, I am lucky enough to get to see my students through Zoom every day of the week. While my current students may not get to benefit from this DonorsChoose project this year, all of my future students will.
One of my main goals in my classroom is the instill a love for reading.
My students have a variety of reading levels and interests. Choosing books to take home for the night is their favorite part of the day and seeing their proud faces after flexible reading groups is mine!
While each child is special and unique in their own way, their love to read is a commonality. Thank you for helping me give my students what they deserve.
My Project
As a first year teacher, I have spent the last ten years collecting books at yard sales, second hand stores, and from family and friends. I was equipped with boxes and boxes of read alouds that I couldn't wait to read to my students. However, I didn't realize that my classroom needed to be equipped with developmentally appropriate books that THEY could read. I scavenge the school's book room and coworker's rooms to find leveled reading books for my students daily. My goal is to have a classroom where I can easily find leveled books for my growing readers.
