My Students

In my classroom, visual brainstorming and planning are central to the art making process. I encourage my students to develop their ideas on paper before beginning their final piece. Doing so allows them to map their thinking and connect art to other subjects and life processes.

My students are incredible.

They are bright, affectionate, and resilient. And they absolutely LOVE art! Many of them have never been exposed to in-depth, content-driven art education but they are already so eager to create, so deeply focused on their work. The honest enthusiasm with which they approach the creative process inspires me every day. Above all, my students love telling stories with their artwork - about themselves, about their family and friends, about their teachers, school, and city, about what they've already experienced and hope to experience in life. Their ideas are original, compelling, and so much fun to see transformed into drawings, paintings, and sculptures.

My Project

I teach at a STEM school, where the goal of connecting different disciplines through content and instruction guides everything from our lesson planning to how we organize our classroom. The creative process is embedded in all subjects, so when I challenge my students to brainstorm, plan, and revise ideas for a project in art, they develop connections between my class and the work that they produce in other classes. Therefore, with access to design tools and new drawing materials, my students will become better artists and independent, critical thinkers who understand the value of time spent generating and developing in-depth ideas.

I teach 300 students, so staple supplies disappear quickly.

Even with a strong commitment to creative reuse, many materials must be replenished more than once a year. Funding from DonorsChoose will allow me to stock my classroom with basic but critical materials. Supplies like rulers, stencils, and quality pencil sharpeners will outfit my classroom with a permanent reserve of fundamental design tools that students can learn to use and value throughout this year and years to come.
