This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Underglaze transfers can be considered as like the water sticker tattoos for clay. My students who have used it previously loved working with these decals, in how quickly they can decorate the surface, and how easy it is to apply a design onto their ceramic forms. The only challenge was the cost and finding these transfer sheets, as they have just become available through Blick Art Supplies.
The goal is for students to focus on the makings of the functional ware and not have to worry about drawing and painting skills.
The underglaze transfers will fill the background space, allowing students to pay more care and attention to the smoothness and how much compression is needed to give care in work. Many ceramic artists, including Jessica Putnam Phillips and Amy Brummond show creative ways to utilize these underglaze transfer sheets. I would like my students to be able to practice these methods in creating professional quality functional ceramics.
