My students need flexible seating options like the WOBBLE chair and balance ball chair in order to concentrate and work to their full potential. The headphones help to cancel out excess noise.
My energized self-contained special education classroom contains students in first through third grade. This classroom services students with various disabilities including autism spectrum disorders, intellectual disabilities and specific learning disabilities. One commonality with all of my students is their need to MOVE. These students struggle to stay seated all day in their hard, rigid chairs. Often, my students are sitting on their knees or standing up because they are trying to find the best way to concentrate.
The school is located in a transient neighborhood.
Most of the students come from low income homes and receive free breakfast and lunch. I am not able to control the outside lives of my students, but I would like to be able to provide a productive and comfortable school day for each of my students.
My Project
As an adult we are not expected to sit in one chair hard chair for multiple hours per day. Why should my students? This year my students have a very hard time staying focused and staying on task. Many of my students wiggle in their chairs and constantly try to adjust their bodies to get comfortable. They sit on their knees or lean over their desks to find a position that will allow them to concentrate.
Students who are given various seating options are able to find what works best for them.
This allows the student to have some control over preparing their minds and bodies to learn. The WOBBLE chairs and balance ball chairs will allow my students to sit at a desk or a table with a seating option that allows them to move up and down or side to side. The balance cushions will be added to the current chairs in the classroom to allow students the ability to move. Lastly, the headphones will be used to block out excess noise. Many of my students get overwhelmed and distracted when they hear other students talking and moving around the room. The headphones will help muffle the excess sounds in the classroom for my students with high sensitivity to noise. All of the products requested will be used to improve the concentration and productivity of my students.
