Fun Word Work and Cozy Reading Nook

Help me give my students what research supports as best play-based learning! What better way than with interactive hands-on activities and a cozy nook to do it in!

My Project

A lot of our literacy center games and materials are not going to make it past this year! They have held up for about 7 years now so it's time to resurface and reignite students' interest and engagement! About 98% of them know their letter sounds and about 75% can blend at least two sounds. What does that mean? It's time to build even longer words and learn more reading rules. Rules like what sounds do blends, digraphs, and high frequency words make. Building reading skills should be fun and create more of an experience than just paper and pencil.

Currently students cozy up under the table on carpet squares to read and do activities with their partners.

They enjoy that too, but I would love to give them another option of being on a cozy couch. I am trying to instill in them the love of reading--to simply enjoy it! We have a volunteer grandma that works at both the word work center and independent reading. She loves working with my students and is a big ball of fun. Not many five year old like to be stuck at the table with just paper and pencils when trying to learn to build and read words! However, many times we have to replace game pieces with paper pieces or make education games with card stock and file folders. While this still engages students, it does not support my students who can benefit from manipulating pieces to build fine motor and hand eye coordination while also learning how to make words. It also helps strengthen all of their fine motor skills which are still developing. We will also use some of these materials as individual activities that can be done in our independent reading center.
