This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Oliver Wendell Holmes said, "Language is the blood of the soul into which thoughts run and out of which they grow." Practicing words with complex shades of meaning (such as idioms, homophones and multiple meaning words) is key for my elementary Resource students' understanding of the world.
In our urban neighborhood near many Hollywood landmarks, our student population is very diverse.
Students come to school with different backgrounds, and different levels of language experience. Students in my Resource program have challenges such as processing difficulties, orthopedic impairments, developmental delays, and autism.
Despite their needs, they show an absolute love for learning every day. Learning new words, and journaling about new words, seems especially fun for my students. They love writing sentences and drawing detailed pictures to explain the differences between night and knight. They love using phrases we've explored together, such as "put on your thinking cap." Playing computer games and hand-held card games such as Go Fish, are also favorites for learning vocabulary words, sight words, and spelling patterns. I can almost see my students' "light bulbs come on," when learning new ideas.
My Project
As mentioned above, my students have learning difficulties which require additional practice and varied methods of input to attain desired learning. Sometimes I meet with my students in a large class, and get 1:1 words study time with them. Sometimes, my students come to my Resource room for a period of the day, where a teacher assistant and I work with them in very small groups. During these periods, we keep "Word Study Journals," where we discuss, write and draw about special, tricky words such as homophones, multiple meaning words, and idiom phrases. Additionally, we work on vocabulary and spelling lessons, to increase students' overall literacy skills. These lessons mirror lessons which are also delivered to students in their larger class, their general education classroom. By using this pack of "Tricky Words" flash cards, combined with blank flash cards, we can create games and activities to help our students reach literacy goals, with repetitions and increased motivation.
Enhancing student literacy instruction by including tricky words, appropriate grade level vocabulary, and challenging spelling patterns will be key to preparing students to access the curriculum, and therefore our world.
