We are the Media Specialist and Guidance Counselor at an 800 student K-4 through 5 elementary school in rural Greenville County.
We have been using Reader's Theater with our fifth grade classes this year and have discovered that it is a simple, painless, and fun way to involve all students in reading. It's a motivational tool that boosts confidence, enhances listening and speaking skills, and encourages teamwork. Repeated reading is the key to fluency and Reader's Theater is an effective way to hone in on this skill.
Students' will happily read and reread their scripts in order to perform and thus practice that repetitive reading that enables them to gain mastery of a text. That in turn increases their confidence for handling a text they may have thought too challenging before. No matter what level students are on everyone can participate and have a great time in the process. "RT" has the ability to transform students from reluctant, timid readers to confident, self-assured participants.
We would like to purchase some swivel stools to use when presenting a Reader's Theater program. The readers would sit in a row on the stools and rotate to the front only when they are reading. We feel that this would serve as a wonderful makeshift stage and really enhance the potential of our Reader's Theater.
