This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As a bilingual teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences. Although 100 percent of the students in our school receive free breakfast and free lunch, and many experience hardships, as soon as my students enter the room they are eager to learn and do their best.
My students are bilingual and have a variety of learning styles, I have to always differentiate my lessons.
My Project
Phonics is a fundamental part of learning to read the English language. Decodable readers can build students’ feelings of success because they reinforce the cumulative nature of early reading development and increase students’ opportunities to practice essential skills. Decodable readers are sequenced to include words with more complex structures as students progress to learning those complex structures during explicit literacy instruction.
With these books students have the opportunity to apply the phonics skills they are learning and to build confidence in their abilities to read full sentences and short stories.
