This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach at an inner-city Title I School, where all of my children receive free breakfast and free lunch. I teach twenty 1st graders. They face hardships that they encounter at home. Many are from broken homes where there is only one parent, severe family illnesses or their siblings/guardians are their caretakers.
My first graders are so much fun, energetic, playful, and oh, so curious.
They show up at school always optimistic about the day, despite any extra challenges that many of them face outside of school. For that reason, these students deserve to feel like their education matters. This year funds are scarce and supplies are limited, however, the need to succeed is necessary.
My Project
I am constantly trying to improve and add variety to my curriculum and pedagogy. This project has games that will get my student excited about Reading. Phonemic awareness and phonics skills are the building blocks of becoming a fluent reader.
The use of phonics magnetic word building board games would not only enhance my whole group instruction, but small group and individual as well.
Phonics skills are taught in word families or chunks. The flip books would reinforce these reading skills in a fun and exciting way.
With the use of these phonics games and puzzles, I hope to instill a love for learning.
