My Students

I am a third-grade teacher at a Title I school in northern California. My students are among the most hardworking and enthusiastic group of learners I have had the fortune to work alongside. They love delving into their favorite books and immersing themselves in hands-on science activities. They are happy, curious, creative, and enjoy the outdoors. Their exuberance for learning is only surpassed by their kindness and compassion for others and each other. They truly represent the best aspects of our community.

My Project

As an elementary school teacher, I expend a great deal of effort fostering my students' mathematical competence, both their procedural knowledge and their conceptual understanding. The latter is key to developing their comprehension of math concepts that will serve them well as they matriculate throughout their K-12 education and beyond.

The use of manipulatives is one way in which I support the growth of my students' math abilities.

Research has shown manipulatives can help develop and cement students' understanding of abstract mathematical ideas as well as engage them in math. From pan balances to graduated cylinders, the materials in this project will help enhance my students' conceptual math aptitude.
