My Students

Have you ever sat in a math class and it felt like the teacher was speaking in a foreign language, or you were the only one who just didn't get math? Well that describes most of my students. I want to change that, so when they leave me at the end of the year they feel like math wizards.

I teach 5th grade in a Title I public school.

That means that many of my students live at or below the property level. I teach in a wonder school with great teachers and even greater students. I have a very diverse classroom. Half of my students are served by Special Education because of various learning disabilities while many of my other students are working well above grade level. Many of my students come from single parent homes with few advantages such as books and technology in their homes. Most of these student have never traveled beyond the region in which they live. On the other hand I have students who have had different experiences and advantages that have help them to succeed in school. Despite their differences my students do have a lot in common. They are very eager learners and they want to succeed. They also learn best with hands on activities. They love working together in groups or with a partner. There's never a boring day with this class.

My Project

My students need hands-on math manipulatives and math games to help them master the many math skills we teach in fifth grade. Many of my students struggle in math and it can be difficult to keep them engaged, but they do love to play games. Students who struggle in math tend to become discouraged and give up. These games will help to keep them engaged and excited about math while they master necessary math skills. These materials will also allow me to work with my students in small groups or one on one. Most students who struggle with math do best when working with manipulatives and hands on activities. These games and manipulatives will help me to customize my instruction to meet the individual needs of all my students. It will also help me to challenge my students who are working above grade level. Not only will my students benefit from these materials, but my future students as well. These are materials that I will continue to use every year. The games and manipulatives will not only make math fun for my students, but also meaningful.

Having these math games and manipulatives will go a long way in helping improve the math skills of my students.

I believe all students can learn and be successful regardless of what challenges they may face. Once a student experiences success it gets them excited about learning and they realized they can do anything. These games and materials will help me show my students that math can be fun and they can be good at math. This project will help my students reach their full potential.
