Fun With Math Puzzles Using 3D Printed Pieces

Help me give my students 3D printer filament to print multiple sets of pentominoes and blocks to practice strengthening their logical reasoning, critical thinking, and understanding of mathematical practices through solving puzzles using the printed pieces.

My Project

Teachers are always looking for different ways to make learning math fun. While on a vacation, I attended a STEM festival where there was a station that used 3D printed pieces for a variety of puzzles that promoted mathematical practices, logical reasoning, and critical thinking. Students welcome the challenge of solving puzzles without thinking twice about all the learning they’re gaining.

Keeping students engaged and enjoying learning can be challenging for students especially when it comes to math, a subject that many dread.

I hope students will be able to strengthen their understanding of the mathematical practices by providing them a fun manner to practice it in.

Our students may not always have the same opportunities that others have in bigger cities to promote learning like the STEM festival I experienced. One of the organizers of the math station was so helpful and even shared where I could find and easily print the puzzles out from an online source. What I found to be a challenge was purchasing the pieces to use with the printed puzzles. Our school recently added a few 3D printers to our library of technology tools. Purchasing 3D printer filament would allow us to print the pieces and possibly offer the pieces to students to take home and continue practicing at home.
