This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
A typical day in my classroom is allowing students to develop questions through inquiry. Students learn best a specific Chemistry concept when they apply what we are studying in a hands-on way.
My students are very inquisitive!
Our high school is located on the West side of Chicago. As their science teacher, I thrive to be more of a facilitator allowing students to have exposure to hands-on inquiry activities to be successful in my class. Our school is predominantly low income not having full access to necessary resources.
The various kits will be used throughout the school year. In our first unit students will use Discovering the Periodic Table to identify trends of the periodic table to then design their own periodic arrangement. The types of Chemical Reactions allows students to see the 5 types of Chemical Reactions hands-on. Once students can identify the types of chemical reactions the Mystery Chemical Reactions kit becomes another inquiry activity to identify unknown chemicals based on the type of reaction that occurs. Investigating the Activity Series allows students to tie chemistry to real life by having a better understanding of why the Statue of Liberty is made of copper.
Chemistry can be a difficult science class for students if it lacks inquiry or the opportunity for students to see all the different reactions in order to grasp what they're learning.
These kits I am requesting will help my students to see and understand these concepts which will help them tremendously to develop a passion for science in their real life and to be successful in future college Chemistry classes.
