My Students
I work with special education and general education preschoolers. I work with these students individually, in small groups and during whole group lessons with their classroom teachers.
My students have various speech and language disabilities that impact their ability to communicate.
Some of my students are completely nonverbal and rely on pointing/gesturing and crying to tell me their wants and needs. As you can imagine this can be extremely frustrating for these little learners; it also makes it difficult for them to participate during the school day. This year I have many students with sensory needs who require individual materials for safety (because of Covid). Additionally, these sensory needs are impacting their ability to eat a wide variety of foods. Many still rely on pediasure for basic nutrition.
My students range from age 2-4. I work with a team to best support their education. I believe in learning through play, especially with these young learners. Not only do my students love to play, they love dancing to music, reading books and any interactive technology that is available to them.
My Project
Many of my students rely on Pediasure and/or continue to drink from bottles. Feeding therapy spots are hard to find in the Bronx so we are implementing a "Fun with Foods Friday" to support feeding development in my Special Needs Preschool. A small group of volunteers, of Speech Therapists, Physical Therapists and Occupational Therapists, will go into the classrooms once a week to address sitting, feeding and sensory needs.
Help our students learn about new foods!
We will be using systematic desensitization approach to "learn" about new foods by looking at, touching, smelling, playing with, biting, and finally eating a wide variety of textures, colors, temperatures and flavors.
The items I am requesting will be used to get them ready to eat foods by using tools such as the z-vibe and chewy tubes to "wake-up" their mouths and practice tongue lateralization and biting. The adapted cups and straws will help them move from bottles to age-appropriate cup drinking. The laminating sheets will help us create visuals to support their learning.
