My Students
Working with students with special needs is a great privilege that entails a lot of hard work and preparation. It is indeed very rewarding once I see my students make progress in my classroom. I have 8 students this year. Most of them are under the umbrella of autism spectrum disorder and intellectual disabilities. The students I serve have Individualized Educational Plans in order to specifically address their focus skills in the least restrictive environment. A big part of their learning, in general, is making sure that my curriculum is exciting and engaging while also meeting their individual needs and goals.
My Project
My students are bright and energetic, but sometimes it can be challenging to capture their attention and calm them down at the same time. One thing I have found very effective is the use of puzzles and painting. It amazes me how much they enjoyed putting the pieces of the puzzle together and how focused they were on completing it. Due to the limitations of their motor skills, it is difficult for them to use traditional art supplies. But through the use of dot markers, my kids can show off their artistic abilities while also giving them a tactile and calming experience.
Completing activities like puzzles and drawings may seem just like a simple activity but for my special education students, this is one instance where they can experience success and accomplishment.
I just can't help but feel joy watching the reactions on my student's faces as they complete their puzzles. I love seeing the drawings that their creative minds come up with. Having more puzzles and modified art supplies in the classroom would help satisfy their ever-growing minds that are hungry for new activities.
