Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
HMS is located in northern Long Beach and about 25% of the student population is enrolled in the music program.
HMS Music students are enrolled in band or orchestra and range in ability from very beginning students who have never played a musical instrument before to very strong musicians who are accepted into all-district honor groups as well as the all southern (CA) honor band.
All students participate in concerts that are held throughout the year from their Winter Concert in January, to Festival Trips and performances in March to their final Spring Concert at the end of the year, students are given several opportunities to demonstrate what they are learning in the classroom out in our community and on campus.
My Project
Having been at the school for a year now, I have identified several areas of need that will help boost the music program at HMS.
Tuners will help students get the best sound from their instruments, and allow the students to tune their instruments individually in a more timely manner.
Many of my students do not have cell phones that they can use to download a tuning app. These tuners will allow them to tune their instruments without the need for a cell phone app.
Percussion sound effects that are often called for in concert band pieces so that we don't have to borrow them from other programs.
A microphone package that will be used by the students to tell the audience about the music we are performing during concerts.
