Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach Environmental Science (grades nine through twelve.) There are five classes totaling about 140 students. Our school is an inner city high school with a student enrollment of over 2000.
A couple years ago we had a trial subscription to Science Weekly Readers. Most of my students are reluctant readers and read a few grades below their current grade. All of my students enjoyed reading current topics in science and looked forward to receiving the Reader. Unfortunately, we did not have the monetary resources to continue our subscription.
We need 32 copies of the Science Weekly Reader so each of my students will have a copy to read in the classroom. It is important that they have a resource that is interesting enough that they want to read and find out more about things that are happening in their world in science.
By funding these Readers, you will help my students to enjoy reading about topics pertinent to their lives. It is extremely important that students want to read - on a reading survey given last month to my students, one student said he did not expect to read when he left high school! Please help us to encourage fun reading on science topics in the classroom so all students will keep reading now and in the future.
