Students starting second grade are just beginning to read and have often focused on picture books with easier and smaller amounts of words on the page. In order to produce strong readers they have to build confidence and read more words on a page and for longer periods of time. Second Grade is such a transitional year because they are learning to grow their reading skills by learning to break apart words and read larger words.
This year with this project, the students will enjoy reading some fun books as a group and work on a novel study that will help give them the confidence to enjoy reading and selecting books on their own.
It is the greatest joy and fun to finish the first chapter book with the students and they realize they can do it! Also teaching them skills to enrich the reading experience as we go! The most important thing for reading is that the student is holding the book in their hand and reading it themselves!
