This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Where the Sidewalk Ends, The Giving Tree, remember those books from grade school? Perhaps you've read them to your kids. They are by the wonderful author Shel Silverstein. If that name doesn't ring a bell, please do an image search for "Shel Silverstein poems." You'll love what you see!

These poems and short stories are staples for any grade school book collection, which is why we'd love to put them in our school library!

The library is at a K-8 center in South Florida that caters to over 800 kids. Our children's parents tend to be immigrants with low-paying jobs in the local tourism industry. They usually don't have a lot of English-language books at home, or take their children to the public library, so our school library is vitally important to our kids' success.

My Project

Shel Silverstein is FUN! His poems and stories are a great tool to turn kids on to reading. If you did that image search, you'll have seen lots of his poems and you'll know just what I mean. Besides checking the books out to our kids, I'd love to read them to Kindergarten and First Grade during Story Time. The actual books themselves, by the way, are special: they are 'library-bound' volumes, extra tough so that they last for years and can be circulated to hundreds of children.

To sum up - why should you contribute to this particular project?

1) Shel Silverstein is a great children's author; 2) Our school library is the only source of books for most of our kids; 3) Your books will be read by hundreds of children over the years. That's what happens when you contribute to a school library: you get bang for you buck. So please help out our kids! They are a great bunch of children and I know that they'd love Shel Silverstein's books.
