My Students
All of my students love learning but their ability levels vary greatly. I have a class of 20 with 4 students who are in special education. Their diverse backgrounds include some with regular exposure to books and others with little to no "out of the classroom" experience. The majority of my students have a challenging and difficult home life. The school is a Title I school that has over 90% of the population is low income. We also have a large foster care population.
The school is a public school in an urban community.
Recently, the school district suffered a deficit and all of its schools suffered a financial loss including loss of vital staff members and lack of school supplies. Most of the students only come to school supplied with pencils, crayons, and a few composition books that will need to be replenished by mid-year.
My Project
Phonics is the most important subject for second graders when it comes to learning how to read and write. Phonemic awareness is the key to becoming a fluent reader. Our school implements the Saxon Phonics program but the program is outdated and the kits have not been replenished. We are missing the "hands-on" materials like the letter tiles and picture cards.
Phonics can be fun and engaging through the use of games.
Phonics can be more than just sounding out letter sounds. With these games, students can work independently or cooperatively for additional practice to boost their comprehension. The goal is for every student to be a fluent reader by 3rd grade. Please help us reach this goal.
