This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The kids who come to my school library love Babymouse comic books. Just google Babymouse. Go on. No - it ain't Shakespeare, but when was the last time you read Coriolanus? It's light, it's frothy and it's fun. It gets them reading. Unfortunately, our current Babymouse books are falling apart.
Quite literally.
That's a good sign, of course. It shows you how much the kids adore this series, which we've had for years. What I'd really, really like to do is 1) get new copies of our existing Babymouse titles 2) Extend the collection so that the kids have access to every Babymouse comic book ever published. We're talking about 23 books here. They are special library editions, guaranteed to last several years and already processed for check-out on the computer. (The books will need to be tough because they will be checked out immediately!) Just what kind of kid loves Babymouse? Usually second, third and fourth-graders. Principally girls. Typically, when a girls returns a Babymouse book, two or three of her classmates hover around the circulation desk, waiting to grab that book the moment it goes onto the library cart. They HAVE to read every book in the series! What a wonderful spur to reading!
My Project
The library is at a K-8 Center in South Florida. We have around 100 kids per grade level. Assuming a fourth of the kids in each grade level end up reading Babymouse, that means that these books will be used by around 75 kids annually. That's a lot of kids. You can see that donating to this project is going to give you bang for your buck! Why bother with my kids? What makes them deserving of your help? Briefly, here are our school stats. Over 80% of our kids 1) come from low-income households (DonorsChoose classifies our school population as one of high poverty) 2) Over 80% are first-generation Americans. 3) About 20% of our kids are special needs children. They need extra help with physical, mental and social needs. Special needs children are bused into our school from all over our city. Our school may be poor, but it has a wonderful heart. Our kids are vibrant and they love to learn. They adore their school library - which, in many cases, is their sole source of books.
They are kids.
They love comic books; they love silliness; they like a good giggle. They are in love with Babymouse. Remember - our current Babymouse books are checked out so much that they are in tatters. You can be absolutely positive that, if you contribute to this project, your books will be used and enjoyed time and time again. Our second, third and fourth graders will never stop checking them out.
Half of students from low‑income households
