Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach block periods of ELA and Social Studies were I get the privilege of truly getting to know the incredible, energetic students who live in this community in which I teach. My students are coming from the heart of the Puget Sound representing the rich diversity of the region. Roughly 72% of my students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. This means a lot of them are set up to have limited opportunities and resources. My goal is to help bridge any gaps of inequality my students may have in being prepared for the future and get the most out of their education!
My Project
With these books added to the classroom library, my students will be able to choose somewhere new to get lost. Similar to my last project, this is for my students who are raising readers. Many of my students coming in are 1-3 reading levels behind. Many get discouraged about reading because of how far behind they are. Graphic novels have proven quite successful to reach these readers. However, they are running out of options in my small classroom library. I chose predominantly series of books. This will allow my students to have an easy next book to read if they fall in love with the first book.
The quote, “Reading gives us a place to go when we have to stay where we are,” is my staple plug to get my students excited to read!
These captivating books that spark their interest will allow my students to grow, be excited to read, get to grade level reading, and go somewhere they’ve never been before!
