My students need a guided reading table and six chairs that ensure a safe, fun, and comfortable setting that enables them to learn and enjoy small-group instruction.

My Students
"Eeeek! A mouse!" Unfortunately, I have heard this all year! This has encouraged me to make the decision to ask for a guided reading table and chairs, since sitting on the floor is no longer an option! Teaching small groups in reading and math is an important part of my day.
Our school houses over twelve hundred students in kindergarten through fifth grade.
We are an underfunded, Title 1 school, in an inner city, where many ethnicities come together to learn and explore while speaking over forty languages! The students in my second grade class are a diverse bunch. My classroom is housed in a metal "addition" that was supposed to be temporary, almost forty years ago. Although I decorate my classroom to be warm and inviting, sometimes the environment isn't very pleasant. I believe that adding some fun furniture will make our time in small groups productive and allow my students to achieve academic success.
My Project
By adding a table and chairs to my room, I will have the space to make the students feel comfortable, without the worry of anything crawling next to us on the floor. Students would be more relaxed in this space and will focus more on their learning, not others around them. As I reflect on my past year of teaching, I have realized that more and more students need learning to take place in a smaller setting. With a guided reading table and chairs set, I will be able to meet with my students to work on reading strategies as well as practice math concepts that may be difficult. It is important that students are placed in a smaller setting where they will receive the differentiated instruction they need to achieve success.
As this year comes to a close, I reflect on how I can improve my teaching.
I believe that implementing small group instruction daily will improve my students rate of success. We have been given new resources and interventions that require us to teach in a smaller setting. By adding this furniture, I feel that I will be able to succeed in helping my students reach their goals and achieve success in their learning.
