Help me give my students with disabilities a classroom that enables them to have flexible seating options (soft rugs/bean bag/reading nook) and a calming corner with all the necessary tools (sensory/choice charts/books) to help them manage emotions.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students may have disabilities, but it’s their ability to persevere with a love for learning that makes me want only the very best for them. For students with disabilities, flexibility is a key component of success academically as well as social-emotionally. These flexible seating options will help give my small class of first graders the ability to learn and work comfortably in small groups and individually. Creating specialized work areas with flexible seating will help improve focus and stamina. It will also offer my students the flexibility to engage comfortably in activities they enjoy, such as reading new or favorite books in a reading nook, taking breaks with sensory materials to help redirect attention or finding a cozy little getaway within the classroom when feeling overwhelmed.
In addition to flexible seating, calming corners have also become a necessary part of special education classrooms.
Many of my students have difficulty appropriately managing and expressing emotions and struggle with impulse control. The right calming corner will provide a safe space for students to retreat when big feelings seem to take over. They will have an independent area to relax on a soft rug or in a cozy bean bag while reviewing and practicing calming strategies. The area will also provide my students the opportunities to explore a variety of sensory toys to help with anxiety, frustration or over-stimulation.
