1st year teacher, limited resources, smaller building, new staff, and still high expectations. "We can do it with your help!"
My students are very enthusiastic, dramatic little people with very interesting attitudes.
They are always looking for fun, fascinating activities that will help make them smarter. Unfortunately, many of my students come from low socio-economic backgrounds and attend a high poverty school in Louisiana. My school has very limited resources, so it is imperative that I engage them as much as possible to nurture their innate desires to learn.
My Project
The resources that I have requested for my classroom are math and literacy centers that can be used independently or in groups at the student's desks. My classroom is very small, so I'm not able to set up centers (reading, media, etc.) I would still like to expose them to individual and group assignments that will be intriguing and fun. I would like to incorporate these activities into my daily schedule that will reinforce and assess skills taught. I also requested a set of crafty scissors that will be a "ton of fun" for the kids to use. I intend on them completing many assignments from their centers that they can beautify for display in the classroom. There is also a request for subscriptions to Weekly Reader, an age appropriate news publication, that will enable student's to stay abreast of current topics. Also it's a good resource to spark class discussion, impromptu presentations, and daily journal writing.
My ultimate goal as a teacher is for every student to learn.
Resources and materials are essential elements that will enable me to do this. As a first year teacher, acquiring these materials are very challenging, and I would not want my students to "go without" exposure or reinforcement because of it. My elementary school teachers impacted my life tremendously and I want to do the same for my students. Right Now is the best time to make the biggest difference!
