Fun Culturally Relevant Books to Inspire and Excite Young Readers

My Project

I am a third grade teacher in Oakland, CA with the most incredible group of students who love to learn. I am currently wrapping up my first year of teaching and feel inspired to continue building a classroom space in which all students, especially students of color, feel safe, seen, heard, and excited to learn.

A classroom library filled with intentionally chosen, culturally relevant books is one of the most valuable ways to create this environment, affirm students’ experiences, and inspire learning.

The library is the first thing students see when they walk into the classroom. I want their eyes to be drawn to a beautiful variety of picture books, graphic novels, and chapter book series with characters that look like them. Third grade is an exciting year that feels like a big jump from the lower grades. Students are interested in being more independent and taking ownership of their learning.

My hope is that all of my students, no matter their background, reading level, or differing interests, are able to easily find books in my library that relate to them, make them excited to read, and inspire a love of reading that will last a lifetime. The books I chose for this project are all written by authors of color and depict children of color. They are a variety of genres that emphasize fun, friendship, adventure, mystery, fantasy, and Black joy.
