My students need toys and fun activities where they can collaborate with their peers, receive their sensory needs, and have a fun learning environment!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My goal for my fabulous first grade students this year is to ensure they leave my classroom everyday saying "learning is fun!" I teach 30 first grade scholars ages six and seven years old. Some of my students are ready to read full texts with dialogue and multiple conflicts, and other students are still practicing their letter sounds. Wherever my students are academically, we will be celebrating all the learning and growth that will take place over our time together!
At my school we have an extended school day and an extended school year- which makes it even more important for young learners to have fun throughout our day!
Everyday we end with "Choice Time" where scholars can choose a fun activity to end their day. This time is crucial for young learners to end their day at school on a positive note so they are excited and enthusiastic about coming back the following day. With these materials I will be able to create the most engaging and enjoyable environment for my scholars during this time.

My Project
The use of games and activities in my classroom will give scholars a chance to orient themselves to their peers. I strive to create a classroom culture where my students build meaningful relationships with each other and start discovering how learning is fun! These materials will be used throughout the day, but primarily during our "Choice Time" block at the end of the day. This is when scholars can come and choose an activity to celebrate their hard work and wrap up their day with their classmates.
Some of the materials are sensory materials that students can also chose to play with, or use as needed throughout the day.
In First Grade we have a variety of needs in our classroom and these fidgets and sensory materials will help all students be successful in the classroom. They might be a small fidget they can hold while they learn, or kinetic sand or play doh where they can dig in and work through emotions they might experience.
I also included a lot of STEM toys. I love the cooperation toys like the Marble Run and the magnets because scholars can work to create things with each other! This encourages problem solving and social skills.
The board games are also for students to learn to cooperate and work together. I chose games that children are often familiar with and might not need an adult to facilitate. I want to see my students take the lead on these games and problem solve with one another.
