My Students

I serve approximately 60 students in a rural, high poverty area in Southwest Missouri. My school includes children from many cultures including a large migrant population. They face many challenges in and out of the classroom. Some students begin school lacking basic skills necessary for future language acquisition and intelligible communication.

My students come to me with language and speech deficits.

I work in an area where many kids have not been exposed to vocabulary and language learning opportunities. Fun games and picture cards as well as manipulatives make learning challenging skills easier for my students. Hands-on-activities help enhance their speech and language skills and they think we are just playing.

My Project

Board games are good tools to facilitate conversation and language while in speech. Each game will encourage students to practice taking turns, asking and answering questions, describing objects, practicing skills such as fluent speech and articulation, and most importantly, enjoying themselves doing it. Games like Sneaky Snacky Squirrel and Catch the Fox provide good practice working with peers and cooperating within a group, further equipping students with appropriate social skills for the regular classroom also. Rather than sitting the children at a table to complete a worksheet, each student is engaged in the activity such as Super Duper Fishing which is working on multiple speech and language goals at once. Games give students the chance to have some power to choose which activity will motive them; therefore, their time in speech therapy is more meaningful.

Playing games as a form of targeting speech and language goals will provide a richer learning experience for my students.

Games provide practice on their goals in a more natural setting which encourages and facilitates carryover. Most importantly, they will have an opportunity to truly enjoy learning while getting the practice they need to be successful.
