My Students
Berthold Auerbach said: "Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life."
In a fiscally challenged environment, keeping the arts alive in education is a difficult proposition. Although our music program has been spared, our budget is extremely limited.
I teach in a K-5 public elementary school with a diverse population of about 1300 students.
My students are generally of low socio-economic status immigrant families from all corners of the globe.
The ability to participate in a music ensemble, to play an instrument or sing, is a unique opportunity for many of these students. We feel that music is an important part of their education and understand that their musical experience goes beyond holding an instrument and making a sound, it actually helps their brains to develop into better readers, writers and thinkers.
My Project
By having access to resources such as games and color posters of instruments, the learning environment of our classroom will be much improved. When students are engaged and enjoying a game, they don't realize how much learning is actually happening. But a crossword puzzle or card game can reinforce concepts in very vivid ways. I can stand at the chalkboard and explain the difference between a whole note and a quarter note all day long, but if the same idea is turned into a game, the learning becomes infinitely more dynamic.
The price of such resources is very small when compared to the value of their impact.
Your contribution will enrich the experience of students for years to come. As pressures mount for young students to pass standardized tests, the music class is a refuge and a place to "wash away the dust from the soul". The beauty in this is that while they are being renewed, they are also continuing to learn.
