Help me give my students flexible seating. I wish to provide my students with the opportunity to select the seating they will be most productive in while they complete their classroom tasks.
What is there not to love when you spend your day with 25 five and six year olds? Every day is a new learning experience filled with curiosity and eagerness to persevere! Teaching in an inner city school in upstate NY, I have found that children at this age are sponges, that are always eager to learn and explore new things!
I have 25 first grade students coming from a variety of different economic and cultural backgrounds, 100% of whom receive free lunch.
In addition, I have ENL students who speak a variety of languages. I am so excited to engage this year's class! My goal is to help each child move into the 21st century by providing a classroom rich in engaging, hands-on materials and lessons.
My Project
In a flexible seating classroom, traditional seating is replaced with seating arrangements that allow the students to sit where they choose. One of my principal objectives in providing this proposal for my students is to reduce the number/duration of sedentary periods of time, which research has identified as a danger to health. Children at this age need the flexibility to move around and explore.
Flexible seating encourages the child to find their best spot to stay calm, focused and productive.
I truly believe comfortable students are engaged students. I want my children to be comfortable and engage so that they can learn to the best of their abilities.
