This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students walk into our classroom every day excited for the new challenges that await them that day. Each day they are reminded that they were selected to be in my class because I asked for the best students in the school and that's exactly what I got. I let them know that they can do anything if they believe in themselves as much as I believe in them.
I teach at a Title I school in Las Vegas where more than half of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch.
Many of their families struggle just to make ends meet. You would never know it from the passion and enthusiasm they show each morning when they come to our classroom. They want to be here because they know that if they give their best, they can achieve anything in life.
My Project
Math is hard and often times it can be very boring to have to practice facts. Games are a great way for kids to learn without knowing that they are learning. Cribbage not only is a fun game, but if forces you to use math and strategy skills to play the game at an optimal level. Before kids know it, they are adding more quickly and thinking two and three steps ahead.
The referee equipment is the continuation of a project that got funded earlier this year that teaches character education through football.
Having the coaches wear attire that distinguishes them as authority figures will reinforce that these are your guides and they should garner your respect. We have seen a ton of character growth from the children who have played football with this group and are looking to continue that development next year.
