Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Unsurprisingly, the largest public community school sits centrally within the poorest congressional district in the country. Our middle school students are from communities experiencing high levels of poverty and are facing a variety of socio-economic hardships. As a child, I attended 2 schools within this same district and can attest personally to families' struggles. Not to mention, our district has experienced a high influx of migrant families that are still assimilating into the community.
Many of our students come to school hungry in the morning or develop hunger throughout the day.
Many students complain about the quality and selection of the school-provided lunch, even though it is free and nutritious. This often leads to students asking teachers and staff for their own personal food items, which we are not allowed to share. This project doesn't fix the underlying issue, but, will have a significant impact on our most at-risk students.
Whether they demonstrate difficulty concentrating or don't feel well due to hunger, with your help students will have the ability to ask for and receive a snack before, during, or after class.
