My Students

My 9th and 10th grade English students are unique individuals that come from diverse backgrounds. As a low-income, high poverty urban school, my students arrive at our school from diverse backgrounds and circumstances. We have students who have come from approximately 30 different countries and speak at least 23 separate languages. They bring with them their own personalities, histories, and interests that help make our classroom community an energetic place. While my students face multitudes of hardships, their resiliency is inspiring and motivates me to work hard for them. Whether it is through more materials, unique learning experiences, or simple supports, my goal is to do whatever I can to support them.

What makes these students so amazing is their positive attitudes, motivation to improve, and the ability to use their differences as ways to teach each other.

Every year we work together towards group and individual goals to develop ourselves as better readers, writers, students, and humans. On paper, my job as their teacher is to provide them with the literacy skills they need to be successful in our world, but I find that through our journey together, it grows into so much more.

My Project

Every day my students face a multitude of obstacles. They do their best to stay engaged and work hard throughout the entire day, however, with long periods and late lunch time, this can become difficult. For many of my students, school is the place they receive the majority of their meals. If they came late and missed breakfast, the late lunch period can seem daunting. With 5 hours between breakfast and lunch, it can be challenging for teenagers to focus on their learning. These snacks are crucial in helping students stay focused and engaged in class. Having snacks for students helps create an environment where they can trust teachers, know they have a safe space, and makes the classroom seem more like home.

All students deserve to feel comfortable and focused during class!

This is why we are requesting snacks to keep in the classroom! It is a way to start building a relationship with them and show them that I care about them not just as a student but as an individual beyond these walls. Being able to provide snacks has been a staple in my classroom and has helped me create windows of opportunities to begin talking more with students and having more meaningful conversations, ones that lead to them becoming more invested in my classroom and in school entirely. I have noticed that by having snacks, students come to class more! The breakfast bars will be kept for students arriving late so they can have a fresh start to the school day. The other healthy snacks will be given to students throughout the day and during after-school activities to keep them going!
