Full Stomachs and Clean Classrooms Make Happy Kids
My students need healthy and nutritious snacks that keep them full in order to be focused in class, but especially cleaning supplies in order to maintain a clean environment for all of them.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My 7th and 8th grade students are beyond amazing! They excel and exceed my very rigorous expectations. I am extremely proud of them and want to be able to provide both a healthy and clean environment for them to succeed. I know that full stomachs make happy kids and clean classrooms help students attend class more regularly by not getting sick. My students all qualify for free and/or reduced meals.
My students attend a Title I school with a variety of cultural backgrounds, financial means, and many are first year language learners with minimal support at home.
I have so much diversity and they show me something new everyday. I love seeing them immerse themselves in everything from art to music, and history to even math in Spanish class.
This is one the only electives that is given for high school credit and I have a responsibility to show them what the language is all about without having to limit their creativity because financially we cannot meet their needs. We would be able to flourish even more if given the opportunity and not be limited to the classroom. These resources would help my class stay clean and healthy.
My Project
Snacks are so crucial in a student's learning. Often times I think this is overlooked in classrooms, but it is so vital to keep kids focused and on task. Small, healthy snacks gives students a boost of energy, help regulate their moods, and usually keep them preoccupied enough to avoid other distractions around them. Using cleaning supplies such as Clorox Wipes and Lysol spray will help to maintain clean classrooms is essential in ensuring that our students stay free of illness, at least to the extent that we may be able to prevent. Many students live in impoverished areas or are homeless and cannot afford certain hygiene items, it is my responsibility that in my classroom, the environment is clean and well-maintained so that my students are healthy.
Boredom is a huge issue for students and one of the biggest distractions is hunger; add to that illness and low attendance rates and we have a huge issue to deal with.
Snacks like cereal bars and graham crakers are especially important for my kids that often only eat at school, and perhaps will get little to no food at home. When the classroom is clean, has a nice scent, and the students have the items needed to significantly reduce germs, full seats are a win win situation for everyone.
