Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach Gifted students from 1st grade through 5th grade My school recently became a STEM school, so we are focusing on enhancing our 21st century skills of creativity, collaboration, communication and critical thinking! Students in our school come from all types of backgrounds, mainly Hispanic and African American.
My students have a love and passion for learning, they come to school every day charged up and ready to tackle new challenges.
I am amazed by the way they think outside the box to solve problems in innovative ways and by their energy!
The majority of the students at my school are English learners with Spanish being the primary language spoken at home. Over 85% of students also qualify for free lunch. We are a Title I school as well. None of these things hold us back, they just make us shine even brighter!
My Project
My school has recently become a STEM school, so it’s full steam ahead to new learning adventures! With these books I will be able to tie all the components of STEM into one lesson. Plus, these books are all fabulous selections for any child to to read or to be read aloud to.
I have purposefully chosen books that feature females, and lead characters of diverse groups of people to make sure everyone in my classroom sees themselves represented in STEM.
I want all my students to see a STEM career is a possibility! I will be using these material as an engagement piece for STEM lessons (which were already funded in a separate project), which will deeply engage students in reading, math, science, engineering, and art skills all in one action-packed engaging lesson, the kids beg to do these lessons, I just need the books to match!
I will also be able to use these books for STEM activities; after we read them students will be able to use the design process and the 21st-century skills of collaboration, communication, creativity and critical thinking to solve challenges that are presented in the book. This will require outside-the-box thinking and challenge the students to come up with solutions while working in collaboration with each other!
