I teach gifted students in grades K-5. They are amazing, intelligent, creative children who accomplish great things every day! These students are our current and future leaders! While in class, they create, research, problem-solve, think outside the box, work together, inspire others, and much more. It is my job to continue to encourage my students to practice these important positive life skills.
Recent research shows that jobs in the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) fields are growing significantly and there aren't enough students following these career paths to fill all of the jobs.
By encouraging our students to enjoy STEAM activities in elementary school, we may just open their eyes to new possibilities for the future. Getting our students excited about STEAM activities can help them be prepared for their future careers. Even if they do not intend to work in a STEAM-related field, STEAM challenges are a fantastic way for students to use the Engineering Design Process while strengthening skills such as planning, teamwork, creative problem-solving, flexible thinking, and perseverance.
The supplies in this project, such as Wikki Stix, construction paper, and modeling clay, will be used in our classroom STEAM Bins. Our STEAM Bins are used to challenge students with a variety of STEAM activities as they build with various materials. The students will use the Engineering Design Process to construct something using these materials while following certain criteria and specific constraints given to them. These hands-on activities always prove to be fun, but also challenge our students in unique ways!
