I am proud to teach a very active and inquisitive group of kindergarten students.

We are a blended "family" in our classroom. This "family" includes ESOL students, several speech students who receive services for processing and articulation, students with learning and emotional disabilities, and students with other health impairments such as ADHD.

My Project

I am requesting Fairy Tales Problem Solving STEM Kits Set 1. Our school is a STEAM school that emphasizes integrating reading and hands-on science.

In order to build student interest and excitement at the beginning of the school year, the fairy tales around which are a part of these STEM kits listed will be used as anchor texts that will allow students to make connections to the texts and solve problems through inquiry-based science lessons related to the texts.

Research shows that when science and reading are integrated, students are more intrinsically motivated and tend to make more life applications.

Using these books as anchor texts, students will collaborate to design and create solutions to problems that relate to subject matter within the texts. For example, after reading The Three Billy Goats Gruff and discussing how the Three Billy Goats needed to cross the bridge, students will be asked to design and create a bridge the goats could use. They will be allowed to test these bridges and share results through presentations. Not only will the students be engineering, their verbal and comprehension skills will also be developing.

Through this integrated approach, students will become motivated to read literature and use their natural curiosity to solve problems. They will develop the skills to be lifelong learners.
