Help me give my students a Dremel Digilab 3D Printer and Filament to help with hands-on STEAM-based learning in the classroom to prepare them for real-world experiences!
Learning is more than just a simple cookie-cutter formula that can be implemented and applied to all students, and that includes students from minority groups, students with disabilities, and those who are economically disadvantaged. Hands-on learning experiences are at the forefront of what engages these students the most.
School data on US News shows 76% of our students are economically disadvantaged.
My class also includes 52% of students who are English language learners, as well as a number of students who receive special education services. Our classroom is a diverse setting where learning can take any shape and form, based on their individual strengths and challenges.
My Project
Imagine yourself time-traveling back to when you were an elementary school student. "The simpler times," is what is often said. I know I've thought this. I also know my parents and grandparents uttered the same comments. However, as a 21st-century elementary school student, are these really "simpler times?"
My goal is to bring STEAM and other integral 21st century skills to life.
What is STEAM? It represents the academic content areas of: science, technology, engineering, art, and math. We are living in a technologically advanced and fast-paced world, and it's time that the classroom can keep up with that. A 3D printer, something that once seemed impossible, is real and accessible to these students today.
With a 3D printer, students will engage in coding and lessons that focus on the Engineering Design Process and collaborative learning. Not only that, but students will also have finished products that they can physically use in class, such as math manipulatives, as well as figures for dioramas and other projects. Students will even have the opportunity to take their creations home as keepsakes. Perhaps above all else, students will have memories of using "that cool machine thing" that will last a lifetime.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
