My Project

I teach science in a Chinese immersion program, where I loop with my students through their middle school careers. Yes, we learn science in Chinese! My students are bilingual and are bold to try new things. Even as we physically remain in a classroom in St. Paul, learning a new language is a great way to open doors to a new culture while fostering empathy and understanding.

We need a new compact freezer for our Cup Design unit (thermal energy).

We explore how features of various cups (i.e. the material, the lid, the straw) and conditions (starting with hot vs. iced drinks) causes stuff to get warmer faster or keeps drinks from warming. While drawing models to help explain the difference in warming rates, students will pose their own questions about the cup features, the air and light around the cups, and how they relate to keeping substances hot or cold longer.

Later in the unit, we engage in engineering and design thinking. We apply different science ideas to develop, test, and iterate on a cup design challenge. Students will account for sustainability in their designs (can the materials be reused, recycled or composted?).

We cap off the unit with a hot chocolate party (please help me supply non-dairy drink options!) and STEM game day (feat. Chinese-themed LEGOs).
